BREATHE RESIDENCY
at Chinese Arts Centre, Manchester
22 February – 14 May 2011
Open Studio: 11-14 May 2011

The three-month residency at Chinese Arts Centre in Manchester is a very exciting opportunity for me. Having lived in London for the past ten years, I would like to be able to experience the life outside of the capital and get to know the art world in the rest of the UK. I feel that Manchester’s past matches my interests and research on British industrial history. I am particularly interested in the Industrial Revolution, the idea of the sources of energy and machines for revolutionising people’s life. I love the fact that the aim of the residency is for research and development rather than producing a final exhibition. I look forward to have a period of time focusing on exploring and testing new ideas, and to share the new work with peers and the public, as well as to create further opportunities to work with new artists.

I often draw engineering components and machine parts, by which I am interested in exploring the possibility of lines, shapes and shadings to form or re-invent the new structure of objects. This investigation opens up the potential of creating new dimensions to space and it might lead us on to see something different. During the residency I will be exploring a new idea that I recently began to develop: drawing as a concept of movement, it is sculptural and performative. I will create structures, lighting, video and live performances to interact with drawings on paper and transform the surrounding space. This process of developing work emphasises on the observation to create connections to link different parts of my practice into multi-layered visual narratives.

A series of public programmes, including Tea Party, Breakfast Club, artist talks, a blog diary, workshops and open studio will offer the audience an insight for overseeing my new development and will create exciting dialogues.
